Helvetas is Switzerland's largest development organisation. It primarily undertakes projects abroad. Helvetas works in Africa, Asia and Latin America to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged communities in rural areas. Basic needs such as drinking water, food, paid work, education, civil society and peace are the focus of its projects.
In Switzerland, Helvetas is committed to fostering solidarity through the provision of information and initiatives to raise awareness.
Helvetas was founded in 1955 as the first private Swiss development organisation. It is a politically and denominationally independent association supported by some 83,000 members and donors, as well as 16 regional groups working on a voluntary basis. To finance its projects, Helvetas relies on the support of its members and donors, from the private and public sectors.
